Many patients are entitled to an N.H.S. Eye Examination paid for by the Health Service.  (Please ask our staff if you think that you may be entitled)

First we ask you some questions to determine why you have come to see us and we also ask about your general health, any medication you may be taking and if there is any family history of eye problems.
This state of the art "auto refractor" measures the focus of the eye and a print-out tells us whether you are short-sighted, long-sighted, astigmatic or have no optical error at all.
Using a projection chart system we will accurately measure your vision at distance and near and give advice on visual tasks (i.e. driving, sport or computer use).  We can then determine the best possible prescription for you.

The optometrist will then carefully examine your eyes from the front and back and can capture images if anything unusual is detected, either for referral or monitoring.
The optometrist has a variety of high-tech equipment at his disposal and here he is checking the eye pressures.  The result from this particular test can indicate the presence of glaucoma.
Visual field examination with a friendly computer running you through a series of simple tests which check your peripheral vision and can rule out ocular or neurological disorders.
Finally, your optometrist will explain the results of your eye examination in simple terms and provide you with a record of your prescription for you to keep.  He will also recommend as to when you should have a re-examination.
