We are now able to take photgraphs of the back of the eye (the retina) and store them on the computer for future reference or if necessary to produce a high quality colour printout.

The retinal camera we now have, is the very latest version of what, until now, has only been available in some hospitals.  The quality of the pictures is superb and having pictures of large parts of the retina makes detection of any abnormalities easier than ever before.

Don't worry it doesn't hurt

Here is a patient having a photograph taken.

There is a brief flash of light which does not hurt and the photo appears on the computer screen.

We normally take two photos of each eye, although this may vary for some patients.

We then have pictures of both eyes for the optometrist to examine and ensure that they are completely healthy and normal.  If clinically necessary, the optometrist may also examine the eyes using other equipment.

We thoroughly recommend that you have retinal photography carried out as part of your eye examination.

If you do not wish to have this procedure carried out then please tell the optometrist.
